Barnsley’s Big Weekend returns with free music, family fun and activities for all
Barnsley town centre is set to come alive this summer as Barnsley’s Big Weekend returns with an exciting programme of free entertainment for all ages.
Taking place over two action-packed days in July, the popular event will transform the town centre into a vibrant hub of free activities.
Visitors can enjoy live performances and family-friendly experiences. From music and culture to sport and wellbeing, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
A highlight of the weekend is the return of the much-loved Brassed On! Festival on Saturday 11 July. Celebrating Barnsley’s rich tradition of brass band music, audiences can look forward to a fantastic line-up of performances from talented bands including one of the UK's finest female brass bands, Brazen Brass, and the world renowned Grimethorpe Colliery Band.
Families are also invited to the Library @ the Lightbox for the launch of the Summer Reading Challenge 2026. This year’s “Read to the Beat” theme mixes reading and music. Join in with fun craft activities, live band performances, and a calm Story Shell space for colouring and reading throughout the day.
On Sunday 12 July, the focus shifts to health, wellbeing and fun with What’s Your Move Day, an energetic celebration of sport and activity.
Visitors of all ages and abilities can get involved in a wide variety of activities, from hands-on sessions with RampUP, Barnsley FC Community Trust and Quest Taekwondo to a climbing wall, cycling and darts.
There’s even more to see and enjoy at The Seam. Explore the world of wildlife through live birdwatching shows with The Hide by Tilly Ingram Theatre and keep an eye out for fun walkabout acts including A Sweep of Swallows.
Families can also take part in a town centre scavenger hunt with the chance to win a £50 Barnsley Gift Card.
Matt O’Neill, Executive Director for Place at Barnsley Council, said: “Barnsley’s Big Weekend is a fantastic celebration of everything that makes our town special. With live music, family activities and opportunities to get active, it’s a brilliant way to bring people together and showcase our vibrant town centre.
“We’re proud to offer a packed programme of free events that everyone can enjoy, whether you’re visiting for the day or coming back to rediscover Barnsley. I’d encourage people from across the region to come along, get involved and experience the energy, creativity and warm welcome that Barnsley is known for.”
