Barnsley to host first local Gathering of Remembrance for those bereaved by suicide

People across Barnsley who have been bereaved by suicide are being invited to attend a special Gathering of Remembrance this September, offering a safe and supportive space to remember loved ones, share memories and connect with others who understand their loss.

Taking place at the peaceful setting of Broad Close Farm, Silkstone Common, on Thursday 17 September, the gathering has been organised by Barnsley Council's Public Health team and local partners to provide an opportunity for reflection, remembrance and gentle connection.

While a regional remembrance event has been held for several years in Rotherham, attendance from Barnsley residents has traditionally been low. This new local event has been created to give people the opportunity to come together closer to home, in familiar surroundings and alongside others within their own community who have experienced a similar loss.

Suicide bereavement can have a profound and lasting impact on families, friends and communities. The event has been developed as part of Barnsley's ongoing work in suicide prevention and support, recognising the importance of creating opportunities for people to remember those they have lost while helping them feel less alone in their grief.

Attendees will be able to take time for quiet reflection, share memories if they wish and receive information about local support services. Representatives from organisations including Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide (SOBS), Samaritans, Papyrus and Amparo will be present, with other local partners also supporting the event.

Councillor Stan Bryan, Cabinet Spokesperson for Adult Social Care and Integrated Health, said: "The loss of a loved one through suicide is something that can stay with people for a lifetime. Grief can be incredibly lonely, and many people find comfort in knowing they are not facing it on their own.

"This gathering is about creating a space where people can remember someone special, reflect on precious memories, and simply be alongside others who understand the impact that suicide loss can have.

"Whether your bereavement was recent or many years ago, everyone is welcome. We hope those who attend will find comfort, connection and support in a calm and compassionate environment as we come together to remember loved ones who will never be forgotten."

The Gathering of Remembrance will take place from 6pm to 8pm on Thursday 17 September 2026 at Broad Close Farm, Silkstone Common. Food will be available from 6pm to 6.45pm.

Anyone wishing to attend, or who requires support with travel, accessibility or dietary requirements, is asked to contact BSPublicHealth@barnsley.gov.uk by 3 September 2026.
