Barnsley visitor economy continues to grow as new figures show another strong year

New tourism figures show another successful year for Barnsley, with more people visiting the borough and spending more money in local businesses.

The latest STEAM data shows that Barnsley welcomed more than 4.09 million visitors in 2025, up 3.8% on the previous year. These visits generated an estimated £431.21 million for the local economy, an increase of 8.2% compared to 2024. These visitors have contributed to very strong footfall data, which is a measure of visits rather than visitors. Footfall data showed that Barnsley Town Centre attracted more than 9 million visits last year.

The figures show the important role tourism plays in supporting local businesses and jobs. In 2025, businesses in Barnsley's visitor economy directly supported 2,521 full-time equivalent jobs, up 0.8% on the previous year.

Shopping made a big contribution to visitor spending, accounting for 41% of the borough's total economic impact. Food and drink businesses also saw strong results, generating 26.8% of the total economic impact.

Most visitors to Barnsley came for day trips, with 3.49 million day visits recorded during 2025. Visitors staying overnight also boosted the local economy, with many choosing to stay with friends and family while spending time in the borough.

The latest figures reflect Barnsley's growing appeal as a place to visit, with a wide range of attractions, events, shops, restaurants, cafés, parks and cultural experiences for people to enjoy. They also highlight the positive impact of ongoing investment in the borough's towns, visitor attractions and public spaces.
