Cabinet to consider next step for A633/ A635 Stairfoot transport improvements
In 2023, residents told us that the A633/A635 corridor and Stairfoot roundabout were among the borough’s most congested routes. Since then, we have continued developing a major improvement scheme to reduce delays, improve access and make journeys safer and more reliable.
The £28 million scheme focuses on Stairfoot roundabout and the surrounding A633 and A635 routes, including Grange Lane, Doncaster Road, Wombwell Lane, Hunningley Lane and Bleachcroft Way. It aims to reduce congestion, improve journey times and make it safer and easier for people to walk, cycle, use public transport and drive through the area. Cabinet is being asked to approve the next stage of work, including the use of compulsory purchase powers if needed, so the scheme can stay on track.
The scheme is part of a wider package of transport improvements across Barnsley and South Yorkshire, funded through the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement.
The improvements are expected to benefit around 50,000 vehicle journeys each day by increasing capacity and reducing delays at Stairfoot roundabout and along the A633/A635 corridor. The scheme will also improve links to the Trans Pennine Trail, supporting more active and sustainable ways to travel.
Councillor Paul Kelly, Cabinet Spokesperson for Environment and Highways, said:
“We know Stairfoot is one of the busiest and most challenging parts of Barnsley’s road network, and people have been clear that they want to see improvements.
“This scheme is about investing in long-term improvements that will support residents, businesses and everyone travelling through the area. It will help us create a better-connected borough and make daily journeys easier for thousands of people.
“This is an important step towards delivering the improvements people have told us are needed, and we will continue to keep residents, businesses and road users updated as the scheme progresses.”
If approved, we will continue detailed design, procurement and preparatory work so the scheme can move towards delivery. Construction will begin once the next stages of the programme are complete, with the scheme currently expected to be completed by March 2028.
