Careers in a box launches with Bernselai Homes

Berneslai Homes is the first local organisation to launch a ‘Careers in a Box’ role play resource created in partnership with Amazelab and Barnsley Council’s Primary Careers Hub.

Primary Careers Hub supports schools with their careers-related learning to allow children to explore the world of work in a fun and age‑appropriate way, building confidence and aspirations as they grow.

Careers in a Box is a suite of resources that primary schools can use to enable children to explore, try out, and experience different job roles, all funded by the council’s Great Childhoods Ambition.

The Berneslai Homes box features interactive activities, problem solving tasks, and short videos from colleagues representing a range of different roles within the housing sector including a lettings officer, gas engineer, planning officer, plasterer, and more. By taking part in real-life tasks linked to each role, children can gain a deeper understanding of what the job involves and how it contributes to the working world.

The bespoke resource designed to support teaching and learning, will be loaned out to primary schools across Barnsley, sparking curiosity, building aspirations, and inspiring young children about the different career pathways at Berneslai Homes.

Steve Feast, Chief Executive at Berneslai Homes, said: “We’re delighted to be the first organisation to launch this resource for local primary schools. The housing sector offers a wide range of jobs, both office-based and out in the field, with opportunities for young people to develop their skills, learn trades, and grow fantastic careers right here in Barnsley.”

Cllr Gary Hall, Cabinet Spokesperson for Children’s Services at Barnsley Council said:

“This is a great example of how council teams and our partners are improving the lives and futures of Barnsley's children.

“Early exposure to careers is powerful. By the age of six, many children have already formed ideas and stereotypes about the jobs available to them. It's great to see local businesses and organisations helping children see a wider world of opportunities and inspiring them to aim high.

“Providing these new experiences and learning opportunities really does make a difference to give children the best start in life and adulthood.”

The Primary Careers Hub is part of the Pathways to Work offer and funded through the Great Childhoods Ambition.
