Celebrating Barnsley’s SEND Stars: nominations open for 2026 SEND Awards
Our Disabled Children’s Team is set to celebrate the achievements, progress and everyday abilities of children and young people with SEND, as well as the dedicated adults who support them, at a special awards event this September.
Residents, families, schools and professionals are invited to nominate individuals who have made a real difference, whether through personal progress, acts of kindness, creativity, resilience, or outstanding support.
The awards shine a spotlight on what matters most: progress, inclusion and the small steps that make a big difference. From building confidence and independence to showing empathy, creativity and determination, the categories recognise the unique journeys of Barnsley’s children and young people.
Children and young people can be nominated across a wide range of categories, including:
Healthy Living Award – celebrating positive steps in wellbeing
Life Skills Award – recognising independence and everyday achievements
Being a Good Friend Award – for kindness, inclusion and empathy
Creative Artist Award – highlighting imagination and self-expression
Going the Extra Mile Award – for resilience and determination
Sports Award – celebrating participation and confidence in physical activity
Community Participation Award – recognising involvement and belonging
Learning & Education Award – for progress and engagement in learning
Amazing Reader Award – celebrating a love of reading
Against the Odds Award – recognising exceptional courage and achievement
Adults will also be recognised for their vital role in supporting children and families in the following categories:
Passionate SEND Professional
Passionate Personal Assistant
Enthusiastic Educator
SEND Champion
Each category focuses on real-life impact, whether that’s helping a child feel included, building confidence, removing barriers, or improving outcomes for families.
Cllr Gary Hall, Cabinet Spokesperson for Children’s Services, said:
“Our SEND Awards are about celebrating the incredible achievements we see every day across Barnsley. This is about recognising progress, kindness and determination in all its forms, and saying a heartfelt thank you to the people who go above and beyond to support our children and young people.”
Matthew Boud, Service Director for Children’s Services, added:
“We know that for many children and young people with SEND, every step forward takes courage and resilience. These awards give families, schools and communities the chance to share those stories and make sure they are recognised and celebrated.
“We’re encouraging as many nominations as possible from across Barnsley, including families, carers, schools, health professionals, and community groups."
Nominations are now open; visit the Barnsley Local Offer website for more information and to make your nominations.
