Community celebration event set to showcase green creativity at Darfield Library
Darfield Library has been the home of an exciting community art project, and on Monday 27 October you’re invited to come along and celebrate a unique initiative that’s not only brought communities together, but brought them closer to nature.
Over the last few months, eco-conscious artist Louise Ann Wright has been working closely with the community in Darfield, running a series of hands-on workshops inspired by the natural world.
In a series of relaxed, hands-on sessions culminating in Green Libraries Week in October, local residents have been exploring their creativity through art inspired by the beauty of nature. Using the library’s new community garden as their studio, they’ve explored everything from botanical ink making and nature journaling, to printing with plants and creating their own watercolours from natural pigments.
On Monday 27 October, 11am to 3pm, we’ll be unveiling artwork created during the workshops, alongside insights into Louise’s sustainable work and a free family drop-in activity that will give you the chance to try sustainable art making for yourself.
Cllr Wendy Cain, Cabinet Spokesperson for Communities and Public Health, said: “This project has shown just how powerful creativity can be in bringing people together and connecting us with the environment on our doorstep. It’s not just about making art – it’s about reimagining our libraries as spaces where people can connect, learn, and be inspired.”
This project is part of Barnsley Libraries’ commitment as a National Portfolio Organisation to supporting local artists, culture, and encouraging creativity in our communities through our libraries. It also supports the borough-wide Love Where You Live programme, which empowers our communities and brings people together, and reflects the values of Let’s Create, Arts Council England’s 10-year strategy to make sure creativity is at the heart of every community.
