Employers invited to help shape digital careers education in Barnsley

Businesses across Barnsley are being invited to showcase digital career opportunities and connect with local schools as part of a new event designed to help educators better understand the borough's thriving digital and technology sector.

Ctrl + Alt + Learn: Digital Careers will take place on Thursday 1 October 2026 (1pm to 4.45pm), showcasing the exciting opportunities available.

Hosted at the Digital Media Centre (DMC) and Barnsley College’s SciTech Centre, the event will bring together headteachers, careers advisers, careers leaders and curriculum staff from primary and secondary schools to learn more about digital careers and the pathways available to our young people.

Digital businesses, technology companies and any organisations with digital opportunities can get involved by hosting marketplace stalls and sharing their expertise.

The event aims to strengthen links between education and industry, giving school staff a greater understanding of the opportunities available on their doorstep and helping them inspire young people to consider careers in one of Barnsley's fastest-growing sectors.

Attendees will hear from experts at TECH SY before exploring a business marketplace featuring local employers and providers. They will also experience the latest technology through virtual reality demonstrations, visit DMC02 and tour Barnsley College’s innovative Digital and Creative Industries and e-sports departments.

Barnsley has earned national recognition as the UK's first Tech Town and is home to a growing digital economy, with the DMC and SciTech Centre supporting businesses ranging from innovative start-ups to established technology companies.

Through initiatives such as Pathways to Work, we are also helping residents develop skills, improve confidence and access employment opportunities, creating a pipeline of local talent for employers across the borough.

Councillor Luke Wheat, Cabinet Spokesperson for Regeneration and Assets, said: "Barnsley has built a strong reputation as the UK's first Tech Town, with a thriving digital and technology sector creating exciting opportunities for local people. Through the Great Childhoods Ambition, we want every child and young person to grow up believing they can achieve great things and have access to the opportunities that will help them succeed.

"However, many young people and school staff are not yet aware of the fantastic digital careers available right here in our borough. This event will help bridge that gap by bringing together schools and employers to showcase the huge range of opportunities within the sector.

"We're looking for businesses to join us, share their experiences and inspire the next generation of talent.”
