Love Where You Live supports improvements at much-loved Thurnscoe community theatre

A community theatre in Thurnscoe has benefitted from improvement works through Barnsley Council’s Love Where You Live programme.

A new metal door will be installed at the venue, replacing the existing wooden one. This upgrade forms part of wider Love Where You Live investment taking place across every ward in Barnsley.

Our Barnsley Council Dearne Area Team has developed the project in consultation with local ward councillors. The aim is simple, make the theatre safer, more secure and easier to run for the volunteers who keep it open to the community.

The new metal door will make a real difference to Thurnscoe Little Theatre. It will improve security by better protecting the building, equipment and props, while also enhancing safety with a properly fitted, firerated exit for emergencies. The upgrade will help keep the theatre warmer and more energy efficient by reducing drafts and heat loss, and its durable construction means it will stand up to weather and wear with fewer repairs needed. It also offers a smarter, more welcoming entrance for audiences and visitors, helping the theatre continue to be a valued community space.

Cllr Wendy Cain, Cabinet Spokesperson for Public Health and Communities, said:
“These improvements are about looking after well used community spaces so they continue to serve local people. Thurnscoe Little Theatre plays an important role, and this work supports the volunteers, performers and audiences who rely on it.”

Through Love Where You Live, Barnsley Council is bringing forward community enhancement projects in every Barnsley ward in consultation with local councillors and residents.

A total of £3.5 million is being invested in local places, supporting everything from environmental improvements to grassroots ideas shaped by residents themselves.

Love Where You Live is all about trying something new, making a difference and getting involved in your community. It’s about celebrating what’s great about where we live and building stronger, more connected communities.
