Marking 100 years of Barnsley’s war memorial
Saturday 11 October 2025 marks a significant milestone in our town’s history—the centenary of the dedication of our war memorial.
We warmly invite you to join us as we mark this historic occasion with a re-dedication service on Saturday 11 October, 5pm, at the memorial - 100 years to the day that the memorial was first unveiled.
For 100 years, the memorial in front of the town hall has stood as a place of reflection, honour, remembrance, and above all, gratitude. It represents the courage and sacrifice of those who served, and the enduring spirit of our community.
The memorial holds an important place in Barnsley’s history. Designed by architect William Thomas Curtis and sculpted by John Tweed, it was unveiled on 11 October 1925 – eight years before the opening of the town hall in 1933.
The memorial features a bronze statue of an ordinary infantryman, dressed in a greatcoat and wearing a steel helmet, honouring all of the men and women of Barnsley who laid down their lives in war. This unknown soldier has watched over generations of Barnsley people who have gathered here to honour and remember those who gave their lives in service, and will continue to stand as a place of respect, remembrance and hope for generations to come.
The evening will include the re-dedication service at 5pm, as well as the showing of a commemorative film projection at 6.45pm. Projected onto the town hall, the film reflects on what the memorial means to the people of Barnsley – past and present.
If you're unable to join us on Saturday 11 October, don't worry — you'll still have the opportunity to experience highlights from the event. From Tuesday 14 October to Friday 17 October, selected artwork and a commemorative film will be on display at the Library @ The Lightbox.
Cllr Joe Hayward, Armed Forces Champion, said: “The centenary of Barnsley’s war memorial is an important moment of reflection for our borough. For one hundred years the memorial has stood as a symbol of remembrance, courage and sacrifice – reminding us not only of those who laid down their lives in war, but also the values of unity and resilience that are just as important in our communities today.”
