More education support for children excluded from school in Barnsley

Barnsley Council has approved a new plan to make sure more children who have been excluded from school can get the specialist education and support they need.

The Alternative Provision Strategic Partnership will create 48 extra places for children who need specialist education outside mainstream school. This could support up to 144 pupils each year. The partnership focuses on creating these places in the Barnsley borough, so children and young people can access support closer to home.

Alternative provision supports children and young people who need extra support, outside of mainstream school. This partnership focuses on supporting children and young people who have been excluded. The extra places will provide access to education and extra help to their build confidence and improve attendance. It will also help the children and young people to prepare to return to school or move on to their next stage of education.

Following consideration of the available options and completion of appropriate assurance and due diligence activity, Delta Academies Trust was identified as the council’s preferred partner to support delivery of the education objectives and outcomes.

"These places will help children and young people to feel more positive about learning and, where possible, return to mainstream school.
