New commemorative stones pay tribute to Barnsley’s Armed Forces community
On Friday 17 April, six new stones were officially unveiled at Barnsley’s Armed Forces Walkway in the Barnsley College Gardens.
The ceremony brought together members of the Armed Forces community, families, veterans and local residents to honour service and sacrifice. An opening speech, prayers and a minute’s silence took place before the new stones were revealed.
Created with support from Barnsley College, the Armed Forces Walkway was launched in 2019, and features granite stones bearing the names and units of current and former service personnel. The walkway is a dedicated space and lasting tribute to those who have served, and continue to serve, in our armed forces.
The stones unveiled at the ceremony commemorate individuals from a range of regiments and units. For loved ones, the walkway provides a place to sit, reflect and pay tribute to those who have given so much.
Anna Hartley, Executive Director for Public Health and Communities, said:
“Our Armed Forces Walkway is an important place for reflection, remembrance and gratitude. Friday’s ceremony was a poignant opportunity to commemorate members of our Armed Forces community, and the vital role the Armed Forces community plays in Barnsley’s shared history. I’m really pleased that we can continue to unveil new stones on the walkway as a lasting tribute to loved ones who have served.”
Anyone with a connection to Barnsley can purchase a stone or bench for the walkway. You can find out more on our website.
