Penistone East ward by-election
A by-election will take place in the Penistone East ward on Thursday 20 August. This election follows the recent resignation of Councillor Kay Hughes due to personal reasons.
Residents of the Penistone East ward are encouraged to take part in the by-election and vote for a new councillor to represent their community.
The candidates that are standing for election in the by-election will be announced on Friday 24 July.
Make sure that you’re registered to vote by midnight on Tuesday 4 August. You can do this online at gov.uk/register-to-vote. It takes just five minutes, and you’ll need your National Insurance Number.
Voters have a range of options – you can vote in person, by post or by appointing someone you trust to vote in your place, known as a proxy vote. The deadline to apply for a postal vote is 5pm on Wednesday 5 August. The deadline to apply for a proxy vote is a week later, at 5pm on Wednesday 12 August.
On polling day, please remember to bring your photo ID to the polling station. This is a requirement for voting and ensures the integrity of the election process.
If you do not have one of the accepted types of ID, you can apply for free ID at gov.uk/apply-for-photo-id-voter-authority-certificate or by completing and submitting a paper form to Barnsley Council. You must apply by 5pm on Wednesday 12 August.
Sarah Norman, Chief Executive and Returning Officer for Barnsley Council, said: "The Penistone East by-election is an important opportunity for residents to have their say and help choose who will represent their community. I would encourage everyone who is eligible to vote to take part and make sure their voice is heard."
