Silver salver presented to the Mayor of Barnsley to mark Royal Yorkshire Regiment's 20th anniversary

Members of the Royal Yorkshire Regiment presented a commemorative silver salver to the Mayor of Barnsley to mark the 20th anniversary of the regiment being formed.

The silver salver represents a lasting symbol of friendship and gratitude between the regiment and the borough.

The Leader of Barnsley Council, Cllr William Brown, and Cllr Terry Durkin, who are both military veterans, also attended the presentation at Barnsley Town Hall.

The Mayor of Barnsley, Cllr Liam Hardcastle, said:

“It is an honour to receive this silver salver on behalf of the people of Barnsley.

“This presentation gives us a chance to mark an important anniversary, thank the regiment for its continued service and recognise the proud connection it has with our borough.

“We are grateful for the friendship between Barnsley and the Royal Yorkshire Regiment and pleased to celebrate this milestone together.”

The Royal Yorkshire Regiment traces its roots through a proud line of Yorkshire infantry regiments, and was formally awarded the Freedom of the Borough in 2008.

Soldiers from Barnsley and across Yorkshire have served with distinction over many years, helping to create strong ties between the regiment and the communities it represents.

The civic presentation provided an opportunity to celebrate the regiment's contribution to local and national life and reflect on its ongoing honoured status within the borough.

Col Nigel Rhodes, Regimental Secretary for the Royal Yorkshire Regiment, said:
