Summer Sports Jam brings free activities to communities across Barnsley
We’ve got summer covered, as the Summer Sports Jam launches with an action-packed programme of free activities for young people across the school holidays.
Running from Tuesday to Friday across the six-week holidays, sessions will take place in parks and community spaces across the borough, with activities designed for children aged 8 and over. Each session runs from 12pm–2pm and 2.30pm–4.30pm, with flexible arrival times. You can view all available sessions and book in advance via Pebble.
The Summer Sports Jam offers a diverse programme of activities including inflatables, bike workshops, ramp and scooter sessions, zorbing, archery, axe throwing, NFL flag, gaga ball, water-based activities, and inclusive sports, ensuring there is something for everyone to enjoy regardless of ability or interest. Weekly showcase events will also take place at highlighted locations, giving participants an opportunity to experience something extra special.
Delivered through a collaboration between Barnsley Council, Grassroots Sports Academy, Barnsley FC Community Trust and What’s Your Move, the initiative aims to get children and families active, engaged and enjoying sport and activities in their local communities.
The programme is designed to make physical activity fun, accessible and community-focused, helping to keep young people active during the holidays while promoting healthier lifestyles and social connection and most importantly have loads of fun.
Councillor David Goddard, Cabinet Support Member for Environment and Highways, said: “Summer Sports Jam is about creating inclusive, welcoming opportunities for children, young people and families right across the borough. By bringing free activities into parks and community spaces, we’re helping families take part close to home, removing barriers to being active and supporting healthier, more connected communities. It’s a great example of how working with partners can make a real, positive impact during the school holidays.”
James Cooke, Head of Participation and Inclusion at Barnsley FC Community Trust, said: “We’re delighted to be part of this collaboration throughout the summer. Bringing a wide range of fun, accessible activities directly into local communities across Barnsley is a fantastic way to keep young people active, engaged, and connected during the school holidays.”
Connor Everard, Director of Physical Education at Grassroots Sports Academy, said: “We are really excited for this summer, supplying local communities in Barnsley the opportunity to be active and instil a lifelong love for sports and physical activities through a variety of opportunities. The collaboration across the organisations is admirable, all sharing the same common goal of impacting communities in Barnsley positively”.
