Young musicians hit all the right notes in a summer to remember

Young musicians from Barnsley Music Service are celebrating an unforgettable summer after performing on international stages and showcasing their talents at major events closer to home.

Forty-two secondary-aged pupils from the Barnsley Town Concert Band embarked on an exciting five-day tour of Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium, giving three well-received concerts to large audiences across Europe.

One of the tour highlights came in Maastricht, where the band performed to a packed audience on the same day that world-famous violinist André Rieu was due to take to the stage, creating a fantastic atmosphere in the city and giving Barnsley’s young musicians a truly memorable experience.

The tour provided pupils with the opportunity to develop their musical skills, build confidence, make lasting friendships and represent Barnsley on an international stage.

Back home, young performers also took part in the Brassed On! Music Festival in Barnsley town centre during Barnsley’s Big Weekend in July. The event brought together talented young musicians from across the borough and gave audiences the chance to enjoy a vibrant programme of live music, celebrating Barnsley’s rich musical heritage and the next generation of local talent.

Councillor Andy Cudworth, Cabinet Spokesperson for Regeneration and Assets at Barnsley Council, said:

“It has been a fantastic summer for Barnsley Music Service and I’m incredibly proud of all the young people who have represented our borough so brilliantly.

"Performing internationally in front of large audiences and taking part in events such as Brassed On! shows the remarkable talent, commitment and enthusiasm of our young musicians.

"These experiences help young people build confidence, develop new skills and create memories that will stay with them for a lifetime. Congratulations to everyone involved.”

Barnsley Music Service works with children and young people across the borough, helping them discover the joy of music through lessons and performance opportunities.
