Free to Go supports people to develop skills to travel independently and safety.
We work with the following groups:
- adults with a learning disability
- adults with a physical disability
- people with sensory impairments
- children with special educational needs
- people who have mental health issues
- children and young people in transition
- other vulnerable people who would benefit from the scheme
How to apply
We take referrals directly from people who want some help to travel independently for the first time, or who have lost the confidence or skills to make journeys on public transport. You can also ask a social worker to refer you to us. There may be a charge for the service, depending on your circumstances. To find out if you qualify for some help to arrange and pay for Free to Go you'll need to have an assessment.
How it works
Free to Go employs travel trainers who'll meet with you, and other people in your support circle, to talk about your needs and find out about your experience of travelling.
When we know a bit more about the kind of support you're requiring we can arrange to do a practical assessment with you. This looks at any physical, mobility or other personal challenges that may need to be considered to enable you to travel confidently and safely.
We will then start to think about matching you with a suitable 'travel buddy' from our team of travel trainers.
We will also work with you to plan a route for the places that you want to travel to, this will include public transport, walking, crossing roads etc. We can produce these documents in easy read for you, to ensure they are accessible. The resources we use include flip-over books, pictures showing the routes by landmarks and a help card with emergency contact numbers on, should you need them. The plans you receive will always be tailored to your needs and in a format that is meaningful for you.
A risk assessment is completed to eliminate or reduce risk, as far as is possible.
This information is intended to provide you with an overview of the scheme and for further details we recommend that you get in touch with us.
