Consumer advice and trading standards

Trading Standards enforces a wide range of legislation to protect the consumer.

All consumer advice enquiries are initially dealt with by the Citizens Advice Consumer Service. To best use our limited resources Barnsley Trading Standards is unable to respond to consumers contacting the Service directly.

You can contact the Citizen Advice Consumer Service for free, impartial and confidential advice on consumer issues. You can call them on 0808 223 1133.

Where needed, cases with criminal implications will then be referred back to the local trading standards service.

Please also note however, the Trading Standards Service doesn't have the resources to take on all referrals to full investigation. The criminal matters referred to us will be triaged and cases with the highest risk to public safety prioritised. This may mean that advice to consumers may only be available via Citizens Advice.
