Get an extra grey, blue or brown bin

If you’re fully using your recycling bins but still have too much waste, you may be able to apply for an extra bin.

Who can get an extra bin and charges

Extra grey bin

You can apply for an extra grey bin if:

  • there's six or more people living in your household

  • there's five people living in your household including two or more children under 3 years old

  • you need to dispose of healthcare waste such as incontinence pads or catheter bags, and have too much to fit in your existing grey bin

Cost

There's a charge of £45 to apply for an extra grey bin, unless it's for healthcare waste when applying is free of charge.

Extra blue or brown bin

You can apply for an extra blue or brown bin if there's six or more people living in your household.

Cost

Applying for an extra blue or brown bin is free of charge.

How to apply

You can apply for an extra bin using our online form below. You'll need to provide the following documents clearly showing your address for everyone living at the property (unless the bin is for healthcare waste):

  • for adults: bank/credit card statement or utility bill (dated in the last three months)

  • for children: annual Child Benefit award letter or bank statement (dated in the last three months), and birth certificate for children under 3 years old

  • for students: bank statement (dated in the last three months) or letter from higher education establishment confirming their attendance

You can upload your evidence when you fill in the online form, or post your documents after you've applied to: Waste Management, Smithies Lane Depot, Barnsley, S71 1NL. If you post your documents to us, please write your application reference number on each document.

What happens after applying

When we've received your application and evidence, we’ll visit your property and work with you to look at the best waste and recycling solution for your household.

If we agree you need an extra bin, we'll deliver one. If we don't think you need an extra bin and that you could use your existing bins more effectively, we’ll tell you how to do this. If you've paid for an extra grey bin but we don't think you're eligible, we'll refund the charge you've paid.

As long as you use your bins as agreed, we'll continue to empty the extra bin whilst you're still eligible. If you don't keep to our agreed recycling arrangements, we'll remove the extra bin and return you to our regular service.

Changes in circumstances

You'll need to tell us if:

  • the number of people living permanently in your home reduces, as you may no longer qualify for the extra bin

  • you move house - we'll need to know your new address and you must take your extra bin with you

If you have an extra grey bin as there are five people in your household including two or more children under age 3, we'll remove the extra bin automatically when only one child is still under 3 years old.
