Alcohol and drugs

  • Alcohol Anonymous  - National helpline, telephone: 08009177650.
  • Barnsley Beacon - Support for people who have caring responsibilities for people with substance misuse issues. 
  • Barnsley Churches Drug Project - Seek to provide nourishment and support to homeless and rough sleepers, call 01226 321877.
  • Barnsley Recovery Steps - Offer support and advice with alcohol, call 01226 779066.
  • Barnsley Substance Misuse Team - call the team on 01226 705980.
  • Barnsley Young People's Drug and Alcohol Service - Free and confidential advice service for young people.  Call on 01226 779066. 
  • Drink Coach - we've partnered with Drinkcoach, free services include an alcohol test to see how many units a week a person drinks and whether this is risky to their health.  Up to 6 free 40-minute online coaching sessions with an alcohol specialist. Sessions are confidential, paid for by Barnsley Council using the code BARNSWC.     
  • Rehab Guide - Drug addiction support for residents, call their advice line on 0207 2052845.
  • Release - Offer information on drugs and the law, contact them on 020 7324 2989.
  • Talk to Frank - Offer support and advice on drug misuse. Contact them on 0300 123 6600 (24 hours) or email frank@talktofrank.com.

  • Citizens Advice Bureau - Independent organisation specialising in confidential information and advice to assist people with legal, debt, consumer, housing and other problems.
  • Community First Credit Union - Offers loans and savings accounts for those who do not have a bank account  
  • Money and Pensions Service - A national service that helps people – in need to improve their financial wellbeing and build a better, more confident future. 
  • More Money in your Pocket - Website that gives local information and advice to support people with difficulties due to the cost-of-living crisis.
  • National Debt Helpline - Helpline offering advice  
  • Fareshare Yorkshire -  Helping tackle the food poverty issues across the county by redistributing surplus food.

  • Menohealth - Menopause workplace support and menopause training.

Local mental health 

  • Barnsley Support Hub - Provide out of hours nonclinical mental health support for 18+ call on 07855 971634.
  • Barnsley and Rotherham Mind - A charity offering support with a variety of mental health services, call on 01226 211188.  
  • Chilypep - Early support mental health and emotional wellbeing hub for young people in Barnsley aged between 11 and 25.
  • Good Work - Supports people living with a mental health condition to find, stay and thrive in work.  Call 0114 2900218 or email goodwork@syha.co.uk.
  • Papyrus - A national service commissioned by us and dedicated to the prevention of suicide and the promotion of positive mental health. Free training available to local businesses.
  • Recovery College - NHS Service offering educational courses and workshops to people accessing mental health services and their families and carers.  Call on 01226 730433.
  • Samaritans Barnsley - offer emotional support to individuals seeking help. Also attend events and give talks within the community and to local businesses. Call on 01226 244447 or 116123 free from any phone.   
  • Talking Therapies - NHS Service for depression and anxiety disorders, call on 644900.  

National mental health 

  • Able Futures (delivered on behalf of DWP) - A free service that supports people in work who have a mental health concern, call on 0800 3213137.
  • Access to Work - mental health support services - Free support for people in, or looking for work, who have a physical or mental health condition.   
  • Dealing with stress in the workplace - ACAS have developed the steps employers should take to reduce work-related stress.
  • Every Mind Matters - Created by Public Health England gives tips and advice on how to manage mental health developed by experts approved by the NHS.
  • Five ways to mental wellbeing - Suggests that a small improvement in wellbeing can help to decrease some mental health problems and help people to flourish. This document sets out five actions to improve personal wellbeing.
  • Managing staff experiencing mental ill-health -  Developed by ACAS details the managers role in supporting employees with mental health and how they can spot the signs.
  • Maximus (delivered on behalf of DWP) - A free service that supports people in work who have a mental health concerns, call 0300 456 8114. 
  • NHS mental health helpline - 24 hour advice and support – for help to speak to a mental health professional and assessment to decide on the best course of acre

  • Brook sexual health charity Offer confidential advice for young people under 25.  Contact them on 0808 802 1234.
  • NHS Sexual Health Line offers confidential information and advice on sexual health. Contact them on 0300 123 7123.
  • Spectrum Community Health CIC delivers integrated sexual health services across Barnsley, including contraception, screening and tests for sexually transmitted infections, vaccinations for hepatitis A and B, and advice on unplanned pregnancy and other sexual health issues.   • Terrence Higgins Trust offer information, support and advice on HIV and sexual health. Call them on 0808 8021221 or email info@tht.org.uk
