Regeneration

Do you love browsing independent shops or having a catch-up over a cuppa or a pint? How about supporting planet-saving projects or getting active? Whatever you love to do you’ll find Hoyland well worth a visit.

Browse the market stalls, visit the modern and welcome library or take a stroll to pretty, nearby Milton Pond. You could also have a look around the volunteer-run community garden Owd Martha’s Yard.

What we've done

Hoyland has benefited from investment by the council to help businesses improve their shop fronts and signage. There's also enhanced public spaces and safety features.

Hoyland Town Square

We carried out major improvements to Hoyland Town Square to make it more welcoming and attractive. We did this under the Principal Towns and Local Centres Programme.

The works included repaving, landscaping and painting. We also installed new seating and power points for market stalls and laid a commemorative flagstone.

Owners of nearby businesses have welcomed the changes to the square, which will be used to host public events.

Shop front grants scheme

This scheme helped hundreds of businesses across Barnsley to refresh and update their signage and shop fronts.

In Hoyland and Hoyland Common, 68 shops were improved with investment of:

  • £156,000 from the council.
  • £63,000 of match funding from business owners.

Public realm and safety improvements

We improved the access to Duke Street car park with a new footpath and a dropped kerb. We also:

  • Removed gates next to High Street which had fallen into disrepair.
  • Resurfaced the pathway to the Market Street car park and added new bollards to improve public safety.
  • Installed CCTV to cover all areas of the town centre and reduce anti-social behaviour.

Hoyland Community Shop

We worked with the Company Shop Group to bring the former Co-op in Hoyland High Street back into use. It has now reopened as Community Shop Hoyland.

We're happy to have supported this project, as part of our Principal Towns and Local Centres Programme. This has meant we have reopened a prominent building at the heart of Hoyland to the benefit of the community.

The new Community Shop will provide people in Hoyland with a social supermarket, community café and learning and development spaces. This is somewhere they can get advice on budgeting, cooking and gain other valuable skills for life and work.

We co-funded Community Shop bringing the former Co-op building back into use. Our contribution was supported by the UK Government's Household Support Grant.

Visit the store to learn more about signing up as a member. You can also head to the Community Shop website for more details.

What we're going to do next

A Town Investment Plan has been drawn up with input from local residents, businesses and councillors. Further projects will be developed in consultation with local people.

Meet our volunteers

Community Fridge at the Cabin

The Community Fridge was set up in 2022 to help save food from landfill. During their first year, volunteers collected more than 50 tonnes of food donations from supermarkets, farms and local people. This food was then offered to the local community. Doing this means that the Fridge has only produced just one small bag of waste in a whole year!

Anyone can drop in and pick ten food and drink items for free.

The Fridge has been supported by funding from Hoyland Ward Alliance.

Owd Martha’s Yard

Owd Martha's Yard' is Hoyland's first and only community garden. It is can be found behind the Belmont Working Men's Club in West Street.

The garden is maintained by volunteers and regularly holds community events.

Volunteering opportunities

You can find volunteering opportunities on the Barnsley CVS website, or contact your local area team.

You can also find out how to get started as a volunteer litter picker.

We post photos of people taking part in projects. This includes community clean ups and bulb planting, as well as upcoming activities you could get involved with. For more details please email southteam@barnsley.gov.uk.

Organising your own events

We like to hear your ideas about how to improve where you live. You might even find other like-minded people in your area who'd be happy to get together to make improvements.

You can also apply for funding through your ward alliance for a project if you can show that it meets the local priorities for your area.
