Trading at local markets is a great way to become part of your local community and get to know the people and businesses that add to an area.
You can trade at our traditional weekly markets in Hoyland, Penistone and Wombwell, as well as themed markets and seasonal events in these locations and in Goldthorpe.

Traditional weekly markets
Each of our markets is unique, with its own start and finish times and facilities. The price for trading at a traditional weekly market varies by location, and whether you're a regular or casual trader. There's an additional charge for spreads.
If you're thinking about becoming a trader at one of our traditional weekly markets, you can trial a stall for four weeks at a discounted rate of £10 per week.
If you apply to become a regular trader for the year, you'll receive a 25% discount for the remainder of the financial year.
Hoyland traditional weekly market
Hoyland traditional weekly market is open every Tuesday and Saturday from 8:30am to 2:30pm.
The market offers fixed stalls on site and the opportunity for gazebos in the high street square.
Regular traders are allocated fixed stalls and pitches.
For casual traders, gazebos must be booked in advance.
Free car parking is available close to the market (Duke Street car park).
Traders can load and unload in a car park next to the market. You'll need to tell us the vehicle registration before doing so.
A trader toilet is on-site.

Penistone traditional market is open every Thursday from 8:30am to 2pm.
Free car parking is available close to the market.
A trader toilet is on-site.
Tables can be provided on-site for a charge. You can bring your own tables if you don't want to rent them from us.
Gazebos are not provided as the market area is indoors.

Monthly Super Saturday markets
Our monthly Super Saturday markets are themed around the following themes: Bites and Brews, Creators Collective, and Home and Lifestyle. You can find the dates and locations of Super Saturday markets below.
The fee to trade at a Super Saturday market is £15. If you're a young market trader aged 16 to 30, you can trade at a discounted rate of £10 (you must be registered on the National Market Traders Federation (NMFT) database - this is free and completed by us).
Bites and Brews
Bites and Brews is a food and drink market, for local street food vendors and traders selling a wide range of artisan, homemade and local produce.

Seasonal markets
We run special seasonal markets during the year, including spring, summer, autumn and Christmas markets. These markets often include additional entertainment and rides (depending on location), have an increased footfall, and a wide range of stall types.

Community open days
Community open days take place in Goldthorpe on Fridays from 14 August 2026, on the Horse and Groom Square. Free car parking is nearby.
Trading at a community open day is free of charge (including a gazebo), but you must still apply to attend. We encourage a wide range of traders, community groups and charities to take part in community open days.
Before applying for a stall
You need to be at least 16 years old to trade at our markets, and agree to our conditions of stall letting. Before applying to trade, you should check the list of items you're not allowed to sell at any of our markets, and find out what you'll need to do first if you're intending to sell food or drink.
Products we don't allow to be sold at our markets
You can't sell any of the following items at our markets:
- guns - either active or decommissioned
- knives – other than those used in catering activities
- swords – including decorative
- knuckle dusters and associated items
- crossbows
- sexually explicit or pornographic material, including DVDs and magazines
- fireworks
- fur-based products
- legal highs - psychoactive substances including products that contain nitrite compounds
- bongs, glass and drug pipes and grinders
- tobacco and non-tobacco blunts
- clay and associated pipes
- cannabis incense products, including sticks and cones
- weed boards
- smoking accessories
- e-cigarettes (existing traders permitted only)
- cannabidiol (CBD) products
Goods needing a special licence or permission are at our discretion.
Selling food and drink
If you want to sell food or drinks, you need to register as a food business with your local council before you start trading. You need to do this if you manufacture, store, supply, prepare or offer food for sale, whether for profit or not. If you sell consumable products (eg hot and cold food or drinks), you must also have a:
- level 2 or above food hygiene qualification
- food hygiene rating of 3 or above
Selling alcohol
Under the Licensing Act 2003, alcohol can't be sold from anywhere or by any person without authorisation. For specialist markets and one-time events, you can apply for a temporary authorisation by submitting a Temporary Event Notice (TEN). You'll need to provide us with evidence of this before you can trade at a market.
How to apply for a stall
You can apply to hold a market stall at our local traditional, specialist or seasonal markets using the online form below. As part of your application you'll need to upload the following:
Proof of right to work in the UK (current or expired UK passport). If you don't have a passport, see the list of acceptable documents. You can also check if a document you have proves your right to work in the UK.
Proof of name: in-date passport, birth certificate, current UK or EEA photocard driving licence, or benefit letter.
Proof of address: utility bill or bank statement issued within the last three months, current year's Council Tax bill, UK driving licence, tenancy agreement or mortgage statement.
Colour photo ID (if you've not already provided your passport or photocard driving licence).
Valid public liability insurance for £5 million.
Proof of your level 2 or above food hygiene qualification, and of your food hygiene rating of 3 or above (or evidence you're awaiting inspection) if you sell food or drink.
Photo of your gazebo if you want to use this at the market.
After submitting your application you need to provide the supporting documents. We can't process your application until we've received these. You can upload documents using our online form below.
What happens next
Submitting your application does not guarantee immediate trading. After we've received your application and supporting documents, we aim to process this within five working days. If your application is approved, we'll contact you with details of the next steps.
Payments
You can pay your local market stall rent, or any other fees we've requested for local market trading, online. All stall fees are non-refundable.

How we use your information
We'll use the information you provide so we can process your application. This will be done inline with the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1982.
Barnsley Council is committed to compliance with all applicable data protection law, including the Data Protection Act 2018.
The details you provide will be kept for duration of your licence plus six years, after which it will be deleted. The information will be stored electronically on a secure council database.

Changing your personal details
If you need to change your name or address, or we've asked you to provide additional documents, you can doing this using our document upload form below.
If you no longer want to trade at our local markets
If you want to terminate your local market stall, fill in our online form below.
You must give at least one weeks' notice, and stand in your final week before the termination takes effect.
Upon termination of your market licence, you give up any right to resume future trading at the market your licence applied to. If you want to begin trading again, you'll need to submit a new application. Any discounts or benefits applied to your first market licence won't be applied to a future market licence, unless stated otherwise.
